Finishing the Book of Ephesians

God willing, on the first Sunday of July, I will finish my series on the letter to the Ephesians. This marks a milestone as it will be the first complete book I have preached in Italian since arriving in country. The congregation has responded well to the Word and seems hungry for more. They have been very patient with my American accent, which I am trying hard to lose. Preaching and teaching in a second language is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It is a constant reminder to me that power rests not in my talents or abilities, but in the Word of God.

As always, Janie and I want to express our gratitude for your prayers, notes of encouragement, and financial support. There is so much work to do, but the Lord continues to sustain us with his mercy. He certainly doesn’t need us to accomplish his plans, but he is pleased to do so, working in us as much as (if not more than) he works through us. What a joyful privilege it is to serve the living God!

Iain Finished His First Year of School in Italy

On June 20, Iain completed eighth grade, finishing his first year of school in Milan. We want to thank everyone who has been praying for him. Moving to a new school when you’re 13 isn’t easy. Moving to a new country and learning a new language is even harder. By the grace of God, Iain has tackled the transition with courage, resolve and self-discipline. He managed to get good grades in a school where he is required to study three languages and made several friends along the way. He’s looking forward to next year and joining the robotics team. We are very grateful to God for his tender mercies in allowing Iain to attend a good school. Thank you again to everyone who has prayed for him! God is good!

Getting to Know the Younger Generation Better

A few weeks ago, Janie and I hosted about a dozen young adults from church (both members and visitors) for a BBQ at our home. It was a great opportunity to get to know them better and allow them to get to know us outside of church. We hope to start meeting with the youth more frequently for prayer, devotions and healthy socializing. With such a small number of believers in Italy, it is crucial that we reach the next generation. We ask that you continue to pray for the young people here, that they may grow in faith and in their zeal for the gospel. Pray that the Lord would raise up godly leaders amongst them.

Food Distribution to the Poor

During the month of June, our congregation hosted a food distribution to poor families in the community. Our deacons gave each family a copy of the Gospel of John in Italian and shared information about our church. We are grateful that God opened this door for us to show mercy to the needy. Our prayer is that these simple efforts will glorify Christ and make him known to unbelievers.

Grazie!

As always, Janie and I want to say thank you for your prayers, notes of encouragement, and financial support. The work load is immense and it always feels as if there are not enough hours in the week. Yet, the Lord is so faithful and continues to show us mercy. Preaching in a foreign language is, as one missionary put it, “hard and humbling”. But the salvation of sinners does not come through our gifts and abilities, but through the power of his gospel. All we need to do is be faithful with the time and opportunity that he has given us to make disciples of Jesus. Thank you for remembering us in your prayers!
